Do want: water-powered jet pack

by thatbaldguy on 30 Jan 2009 at 20:30:45, under technomancy

It’s the 21st century dammit. Where’s my jet pack? I need to zoom around the skies willy-nilly, as is my want.

Well, I’ll just have to be satisfied with being tethered to a large body of water for now.

Note how the sound track has been removed at WMG’s request. Buncha buzzkills.

LED light bulb: 12x more efficient, 60 year life, $3

by thatbaldguy on 30 Jan 2009 at 19:02:34, under science

New LED Light Bulb Science

Coming soon (well, in a couple years) LED light bulbs that are 12 times more efficient than tungsten bulbs1, three times more efficient than CFLs, and will last for 100,000 hours. All for about $3.

They also avoid using any toxic materials, like lead: The new LEDs use gallium nitride, which until now was too expensive to obtain because it had to be grown on sapphire wafers, which brought the cost of the lightbulbs to $28 each.

The new method, developed by Cambridge University-based Centre for Gallium Nitride, uses silicon wafers, bringing the cost down to $3 each. And if you think this is a thing of the future, think again: Prototypes are already being produced and the light bulbs may reach the market in a mere two years.

Teh rawk.

Metal business cards with articulated hand

by thatbaldguy on 28 Jan 2009 at 20:08:08, under art and design

Typographer and designer Aehrich O’Dubhchon has designed these beautiful metal business cards with articulated hands.

The photographer and craftsman Todd Schellinger asked me to design some metal business cards for his studio Hand + Eye. He gave me pretty broad creative license, asking only that it speak to the tradition of craftsmanship that he brings to each job.

Designing for metal presents many challenges and opportunities. I knew from the start that I wanted to make something that would transform from one state of being to another.

Mr. O’Dubhchon, I salute you.

LaidOffCamp SF

Speaking of camps, now there’s LaidOffCamp:

LaidOffCamp is an ad-hoc gathering of unemployed & self-employed people (including entrepreneurs and startups) who want to share and interact with each other.

Good for them. I hope they hold one in L.A. I hope not to need to attend.

Another reason to move to San Francisco: BaconCamp

Bacon taped to a cat, from Mr. John Scalzi

Bacon taped to a cat, from Mr. John Scalzi

I’ve often though to myself, BarCamp? FooCamp? Sure, they’re fun and all, but what about Bacon? Bacon, as Il Lupo will tell you, is the perfect food.  This site even comes a delicious bacon flavor. Surely bacon deserves its own camp?

Turns out I’m not alone in my predelictions.

BaconCamp, a celebration of bacon in the spirit of BarCamp, takes place on March 21st in San Francisco. Make sure to let them know what bacon dish you are bringing.

How much would you pay to attend such an event? A lot? Oodles? Doesn’t matter. Quoth the official BaconCamp wiki:

Cost:  this event is FREE FREE FREE.  However, in the spirit of barcamp, we want to give back to the commnity.  We will be taking $5 sliding scale donations at the door.  All proceeds go to the American Heart Association.  We hope that they find some cures for heart disease so we can continue the bacon indulgence.

Now that’s the kind of public service President Obama has been talking about. All hail patriotic bacon!
