Inbox Zero Achieved!
by thatbaldguy on 26 Mar 2009 at 01:09:33, under technomancy
Since I first heard about the Inbox Zero Nerd Merit Badge, I’ve been chipping away at my email inbox. It took a herulean effort, some changes to my work flow and the way I track task status, but I finally did it. My friends, my inbox has finally achieved that much lauded and noble state: zero messages.
Can you smell the self-satisfaction from there?
Wait a minute. Would you look at that. New email. Damn.
Oh well, it was good while it lasted.
UPDATE: Woohoo! It was just a status update. Message filed and Inbox Zero once again!
Susan Crawford Named Special Assistant to the President for teh Nerds
by thatbaldguy on 25 Mar 2009 at 00:02:46, under public interest
Just in time for Ada Lovelace Day, Susan Crawford has been named as special assistant to the president for science, technology, and innovation policy. Professor Crawford teaches internet and communications law at University of Michigan Law School, has served on the ICANN board of directors, and founded OneWebDay.
Quoth Wendy Seltzer over on CircleID:
Susan is one of clearest thinkers I know on technology policy—which is critical to the continued development of technology (see, for example, her “Biology of the Broadcast Flag” (PDF), showing early the errors of technology mandates). She founded OneWebDay, an “Earth Day for the Internet,” and reminded a global community that we sometimes need to demonstrate the Web’s values in order to preserve them. She understands that the Net’s openness and accessibility has fueled innovation around it, and has thought deeply about how we (as public, industry, and government) can help to keep that spirit going.
Congrats Prof!
Warren Ellis on the Nutritional Value of Love

Quoth Mr. Ellis:
If love was all you need, then hugging people would have nutritional value. It doesn’t. However, killing and eating them does. QED.
Words to live by, my friends.

Intriguing viral video that appears to be the kick off point for an ARG. If you know what product it’s promoting, please let us know in the comments. We’re too lazy to be bothered solving anagrams or looking for hidden images on the web.
Obama says Gays are OK!
by thatbaldguy on 19 Mar 2009 at 15:21:44, under public interest
The Obama administration has reversed another1 Bush administration stance, and has committed to signing a UN declaration which calls for the decriminalization of homosexuality. Quoth Reuters:
State Department spokesman Robert Wood said the Obama administration, which took office eight weeks ago, would now join 66 other U.N. member states who supported a U.N. statement in December that condemned human rights violations based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
“The United States is an outspoken defender of human rights and critic of human rights abuses around the world,” Wood told reporters.
“As such, we join with other supporters of this statement, and we will continue to remind countries of the importance of respecting the human rights of all people in all appropriate international fora.”

I am a cult member: I admit it. But if Microsoft doesn’t screw up this new Surface technology too much, it will truly make the world a better place.
