LA Opera Costume Shop Sale

by thatbaldguy on 01 Oct 2009 at 17:11:53, under culture

SUQEE!

Yelp has the details:

You’ve seen them on stage — now you can have an LA Opera costume of your very own!  Wear it for Halloween, wear it to work, wear it around the house, wear it where ever you want because it’s yours!

For the first time ever, LA Opera will be doing a little fall cleaning to make room for new costumes, and will be selling gowns, hats, gloves, shoes, capes, coats, bodices, and complete ensembles from its costume shop located in downtown Los Angeles.  You can purchase costumes and accessories priced $5-$250 from your favorite LA Opera productions like La Traviata, Carmen, Don Giovanni, The Fly, and more.

Parking is available across the street in the Little Toyko Shopping Center.

I’ll see you there!

Wonder Woman to Sing at Los Angeles Jazz Club

by thatbaldguy on 06 Mar 2009 at 02:38:35, under culture, music

Lynda CarterLynda Carter will be performing at the Catalina Jazz Club1 in Hollywood Thursday, March 5th2 through Saturday, March 7th. Quoth the LA Times:

Expect to hear a well-polished set from a performer who can deliver a song even better than she can take down a bad guy.

I’m not ashamed to admit that this fulfills many an adolescent fantasy. I should be ashamed to admit it, but I’m not, do you hear?! Not!

machine project Travels through Space and Time

by thatbaldguy on 04 Mar 2009 at 17:53:14, under art and design

This weekend, machine project — our favorite gallery/hackspace — is traveling through space and time!

Friday, March 6th, 8pm. An evening of fiction, poetry, film and mechanical oddities with scifi author Mark von Schlegell (visiting from Germany, and author of VENUSIA and the upcoming MERCURY STATION), Claire Phillips (BLACKMARKET BABIES) and Anthony McCann (FATHER OF NOISE, MOONGARDEN, Machine Poet Laureate, you know — Anthony). Curated by Annie O’Malley.
-> More info here.

Saturday March 7th, 8pm. A talk on the rise and fall of civilizations, untold wealth, extraordinary events, our momentous future and what these have to do with materials innovations.
-> More info here.

Sunday, March 8th, 1pm.
Dorkbot! (time traveler’s courtesy note: remember, it’s Daylight Savings Time the night before.)
-> More info here.

Sunday, March 8th, 8pm.
A rousing sing-a-long where audience members will learn a unique, alternative musical language and by the end of the night become a choir, singing traditional hymns from the 19th century — all voices are welcome, a willingness to sing is the only requirement.
-> More info here.

With any luck, I’ll get to go to at least two of these. It’s anyone’s guess which though. See you there?

Road Warrior Weekend

by thatbaldguy on 17 Feb 2009 at 20:18:01, under culture

What are you doing on the weekend before Thanksgiving? I mean, you’ll have been to Seattle Steamcon in October, then there’s Halloween, the high holy day of the internet, and it’s always tough going cold turkey off the cosplay. I’m hoping to get my fix at the Road Warrior Weekend [sound warning] hosted by the delightful Scarlett Harlott. Word has it the Death Guild will be bringing their Thunder Dome and all.

And dig that tag line: Kinda like a post-apocalyptic Burning Man…without the hippies!

I’m pretty sure I’ll be there, with bells on…my arse-less leather chaps.

First Ever Edwardian Ball in Los Angeles

by thatbaldguy on 12 Jan 2009 at 20:00:07, under culture

You know, I’ve heard about this Edwardian Ball thing from a number of people, and I always thought, “Well, if they really wanted me to go, they’d hold it in Los Angeles. I loves me a costume ball, but San Francisco is a fair ways away, but I’ve got mouths to feed.”

As if the fine organizers of the event heard my thoughts (which is kinda creepy) I find that The Edwardian Ball is in fact coming to Los Angeles in just a few weeks!

Edwardian Ball 2009 - Los Angeles

The Edwardian Ball Los Angeles – a splendid San Francisco tradition flies south for the winter, presenting an elegant, turn of the century celebration of music, theatre, dance, circus arts, DJs, ballroom dance, fashion, technology, and of course, the art and stories of Edward Gorey. Held in the historic Tower Theater, and hosted by LA’s own big top phenomenon Cirque Berzerk in partnership with Edwardian Ball co-creators Rosin Coven and Vau de Vire Society, the night promises an unforgettable blend of audience and performance with humor, darkness, and style. Also featuring Helios Jive, DJ Xian, Jill Tracy, Miz Margo, Dark Garden Corsetry, and many special guests.
